Abstract

This paper is an extract from a PhD study on caring for the aged in oldrnpeople’s homes in Zambia and implications for adult education programmes. Itrndiscusses the challenges faced by caregivers in old people’s homes which are arnform of institutional care for the aged. The challenges faced by caregiversrnincluded inadequate and erratic funding, low staffing levels, lack of trainingrnopportunities, absence of a national policy on ageing, lack of transport, lackrnof information communication technology facilities and high demand forrnadmission of the aged to old people’s homes. The paper concluded that therncombination of the above challenges made caregivers in old people’s homes inrnZambia operate under difficult and demotivating conditions. It recommended thatrnthe challenges needed to be mitigated by the government and other stakeholdersrnso that caregivers could operate better and, ultimately, provide improvedrnservices and care to the aged residing in these homes.
